The Nest Autumn 2024
1st October
This morning, the children from The Nest introduced the FS Session by practicing their "Harvest Festival" song and used their human senses. The children listened for the birds, saw the changes from the last session in the FS Site, touched the leaves and smelt the aftermath of the rain. The children enjoyed the game at the beginning of the Session as the gross motor skills warm up. Over the last few weeks Mrs Legg has enjoyed watching the children use their gross motor skills so today's session is going to focus on using their fine motor skills too. Today the theme of the Session was Hapazome. Hapazome is a form of eco-printing or natural dyeing that involves transferring coloured pigments from plant materials onto fabric by pounding with a hammer. At the beginning of the FS Session Activity "Hapazome", Mrs Legg taught the children the health & safety of using tools and modelled the task. All the children that attended the FS Session today listened first and then each produced a piece of hapazome artwork. Their artwork was great! The children walked to the FS Site there and back today really well and safely. The children focused well throughout the session and fun was had. Well done.

This morning, the children from The Nest changed into their outdoor weather gear quickly and were ready to go at 11.00am. The weather forecast was raining and sunny today! Mrs Legg was proud that all the children were warmly dressed and suitable for working outdoors. This week we used the wooden trolley to take all the equipment to the Forest School Site. As a group we have named the trolley, "Dolly". Trolley Dolly!! The children found it fun naming the trolley!! When we arrived at the Forest School Site the children looked around it spotting any changes. Lots of the leaves had fallen to the floor and there were loose branches on the ground. The children used their "human senses" and "relaxation techniques" to find calm and good listening skills. The indoor buzz word for the day was calm too!! Mrs Legg introduced the new tools to the children - pruning saw and palm drills. Mrs Legg reminded and taught the children the health & safety of using tools and modelled the task. Mrs Legg reminded the children of the "oooo tools" and how to protect their femoral arteries - "Respect Position". Most of the children had a go at using a pruning saw and palm drill supervised by an adult member of staff. The children that were not using the tools erected shelters using paracord and pegs. In total, seven wooden sawn bead necklaces were made ready for decorating next week. The children showed good concentration with the tools and determination to saw right through the branches. The rest of the group (remaining children) will complete their necklaces in next week's session and the necklaces will be coloured and decorated with sharpie pens. The children walked to the FS Site there and back today really well and safely. Mrs Legg was proud of the end results today. Well done.
W/C 14th October This morning, the children from The Nest changed into their outdoor weather gear quickly and were ready to go at 11.00am. The weather forecast was sunny. This week we used the wooden trolley to take all the equipment to the Forest School Site. As a group we have named the trolley, "Dolly". Trolley Dolly!! When we arrived at the Forest School Site, we set up our equipment and resources at the back of it under the trees; making the most of the cover from the above trees. Mrs Legg found the children who had not completed their wooden beads from the last session - there were only four. Mrs Legg reminded and taught those children the health & safety of using tools and modelled the task. Whilst Mrs Legg helped the four children to make their beads the other children used the selection of coloured sharpies to colour the dried out wooden beads from the last session. They looked much more professional with the coloured designs on them. The second main activity today was creating "Fairy Fires" with the ferro rods, scallop shells and cotton wool. The children showed excellent resilience with the fire striking and a few of them showed the skill to light the cotton wool. The children and Mrs Legg enjoyed the fire lighting session. Well done to all.
